Pressure Mounts on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer After Local Election Defeat
London: Keir Starmer is facing growing political pressure after the ruling party suffered a major setback in local elections across the United Kingdom.
According to British media reports, several senior cabinet members have reportedly called on Starmer to resign following the disappointing election results. Among those allegedly demanding leadership changes are Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, and Home Office minister Shabana Mahmood.
Reports suggest that cabinet members have urged Starmer to provide a clear timeline for stepping down from office. Around 70 Labour Members of Parliament are said to have backed calls for his resignation, while 81 MPs are required to formally trigger a leadership challenge within the party.
The political crisis deepened after five parliamentary secretaries resigned from their posts on the same day, with speculation growing that more ministers could leave the government in the coming days.
Despite the turmoil, the British prime minister moved quickly to appoint replacements for departing aides and ministers. David Burton-Sampson was named assistant for the Department of Health and Social Care, while Lindsey Farnworth joined the Ministry of Justice. Jane Kirkham was appointed to the Department for Environment, Michael Payne to the Home Office, and Tim Roca to the Department for Work and Pensions.
Labour MP Sean Woodcock was also appointed as an assistant to the Cabinet Office.
Earlier, while addressing concerns over the election defeat and leadership challenge, Keir Starmer admitted the results were “extremely difficult” and accepted responsibility for the outcome. However, he insisted he had no plans to step down and said the public still needed hope and stability from the government.
