US Says Iran Actions Below War Threshold as Ceasefire Remains Intact

Washington: US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth say the ceasefire with Iran remains in effect despite a series of recent maritime and military incidents in the region.

Hegseth stated that since the truce was announced, Iran has reportedly targeted commercial shipping multiple times, including firing at vessels on nine occasions and seizing two container ships. He also claimed that US forces have faced more than 10 separate attacks. However, he stressed that these incidents remain “below the threshold” that would trigger a return to large-scale combat operations.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed that position, insisting the ceasefire is still holding. He described ongoing military activity as part of a “separate and distinct” mission aimed at stabilizing key international waterways.

“These international waters belong to all nations,” Hegseth said, adding that no country should be allowed to restrict global trade routes. He emphasized that the US mission is temporary and focused on ensuring the safe flow of commerce.

Hegseth further clarified that American forces do not intend to enter Iranian territory, including its waters or airspace, and are not seeking direct confrontation. “We’re not looking for a fight,” he said, while warning that Iran cannot be permitted to obstruct international shipping.

He added that any escalation would ultimately be reviewed by the US president to determine whether it constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement.

The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region, with concerns growing over the security of critical maritime routes and the stability of the fragile US-Iran truce.

Observers have also pointed out that Hegseth has largely taken questions from conservative media outlets during recent press briefings on Iran.
