Iran Open to Talks if US Shows Serious Commitment, Says Senior Lawmaker

TEHRAN, June 9: A senior Iranian lawmaker has stated that Tehran remains open to diplomatic engagement with the United States, provided Washington demonstrates genuine commitment and respects the principles of negotiations.

Speaking in an interview with an international media outlet, Ibrahim Azizi, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Iran currently lacks confidence in the United States and questions the sincerity of its approach toward dialogue.

Azizi noted that Iran views negotiations as part of a broader strategic process and emphasized that meaningful progress would require evidence of seriousness from the American side. He added that if the US administration adheres to agreed principles and demonstrates a constructive attitude, Tehran would have no objection to further discussions.

Addressing obstacles to potential talks, Azizi said Iran has yet to see a practical framework capable of producing tangible results. He pointed to the issue of Iranian assets frozen abroad as one example of unresolved concerns affecting trust between the two sides.

The Iranian official also clarified that uranium enrichment and other nuclear-related matters are not currently part of any active negotiations. According to him, discussions on those subjects are not the focus at this stage.

Azizi stressed that the possibility of a future peace agreement between Iran and the United States depends largely on Washington’s conduct. He warned that if current policies continue, prospects for an agreement would remain limited due to the lack of trust.

He further stated that progress on issues related to Iran’s national interests, economic concerns, and regional matters, including Lebanon, could create conditions for advancing diplomatic efforts. However, he emphasized that Iran would continue supporting its regional allies and would not retreat from its established positions without meaningful developments.
