Pakistan’s Mediation Role Not Opposed by India, Says US Secretary of State Marco Rubio
New Delhi – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that India has never raised objections to Pakistan’s role as a mediator in matters related to Iran, while emphasizing that diplomatic efforts with Tehran are still ongoing.
Speaking during his visit to India, Rubio was asked whether New Delhi had expressed concerns over Pakistan reportedly acting as a mediator in the ongoing US-Iran discussions.
In response, Rubio said India has consistently highlighted its concerns about armed militant groups allegedly operating from Pakistani territory and targeting India. However, he clarified that Pakistan’s role as a facilitator or mediator in matters concerning Iran had never become an issue in discussions with Indian officials.
Rubio added that there is currently a “strong proposal” on the table regarding Iran’s commitment to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and participating in serious, time-bound negotiations over its nuclear program.
He expressed optimism that diplomatic efforts could succeed, noting that Gulf countries and several members of the international community support the proposed framework.
The US Secretary of State also said President Donald Trump is not rushing toward any agreement and will not accept a “bad deal.” According to Rubio, Washington intends to give diplomacy every possible chance before considering alternative options.
Rubio further stated that a future agreement with Iran remains possible and stressed that under any potential deal, Israel would continue to retain the right to defend itself.
