Indian Army Helicopter Crash Raises Questions Over Aging Fleet

An Indian Army HAL Cheetah helicopter crashed near Tangtse in the Ladakh region, leaving three military personnel injured, according to Indian media reports.

The helicopter was reportedly carrying senior Indian Army officer Major General Sachin Mehta along with two other personnel when the accident occurred in the high-altitude area. All those on board survived the crash with minor injuries, while authorities immediately launched an investigation into the incident.

Defence analysts say the crash has once again highlighted concerns regarding the continued use of decades-old Cheetah and Chetak helicopters in the Indian military fleet. India has been working to gradually replace the aging helicopters with locally developed Light Utility Helicopters (LUH), but questions remain regarding production speed and operational readiness.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s armed forces continue expanding and modernizing their helicopter capabilities across all three services.

Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force are currently operating Leonardo AW139M helicopters for search and rescue missions as well as VVIP transport duties. The Pakistan Air Force has also inducted Airbus H125 helicopters, which are already being used by the Pakistan Army for ISR and rescue operations.

In the naval sector, Pakistan Navy operates Harbin Z-9EC helicopters and is also moving toward advanced unmanned aerial systems such as the SCHEIBEL CAMCOPTER S-100 for surveillance and intelligence missions in the Indian Ocean.

Security experts believe Pakistan’s focus on modern aviation platforms is helping improve operational efficiency, aerial surveillance, and flight safety standards.

Pakistan’s Armed Forces Rapidly Modernizing Helicopter Capabilities

Pakistan’s armed forces are rapidly upgrading their helicopter fleets with modern aviation technology, enhancing capabilities in search and rescue, surveillance, intelligence gathering, and VVIP transportation operations.

According to defence reports, Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force are currently operating Leonardo AW139M helicopters for search and rescue missions as well as VVIP transport duties.

The Pakistan Air Force has also recently inducted Airbus H125 helicopters into service. The aircraft were already being used by the Pakistan Army for search and rescue and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Navy continues operating Harbin Z-9EC helicopters for anti-submarine warfare operations and VVIP transportation. The navy is also moving toward advanced unmanned aviation systems, including the SCHEIBEL CAMCOPTER S-100, for ISR and maritime surveillance missions in the Indian Ocean.

Defence analysts say Pakistan’s military is placing increasing emphasis on adopting modern utility helicopters and advanced aerial systems, leading to improvements in operational performance, surveillance capabilities, and flight safety standards.

On the other hand, concerns continue to emerge regarding aging HAL Cheetah helicopters used by the Indian military. Reports indicate that India is attempting to replace the older aircraft with locally developed Light Utility Helicopters, although criticism remains over production delays and fleet modernization challenges.
