Trump Rules Out Sanctions Relief Until Comprehensive Iran Peace Deal Is Reached
Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that sanctions on Iran will remain in place and frozen Iranian assets will not be released until a formal and comprehensive peace agreement is finalized between the two sides.
In an interview with American media, Trump emphasized that the restoration of Iranian assets would only be considered after a final settlement is achieved. He also indicated that Washington is not currently seeking Lebanon’s inclusion in any short-term arrangement with Tehran.
Meanwhile, Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, said that the return of approximately $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets is essential for ending the conflict that has persisted over the past three months. He stressed that Tehran continues to view the release of those funds as a key requirement in ongoing discussions.
According to various reports, the U.S. Treasury Department is evaluating proposals that could direct a portion of the frozen Iranian assets toward compensating Gulf allies for losses linked to recent regional tensions.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has reportedly instructed a special team to assess the financial and material damage suffered by Kuwait and Bahrain following recent drone and missile attacks attributed to Iran. Officials are also said to be examining whether the frozen assets could be used to address any future claims arising from similar incidents.
Political observers believe that the proposal could add a new layer of complexity to ongoing diplomatic efforts and the fragile ceasefire process between Washington and Tehran. Analysts warn that disagreements over the frozen funds may become a significant obstacle in negotiations aimed at achieving a broader and lasting agreement.
