Death Toll from Powerful Philippines Earthquake Rises to 41, Thousands Displaced
MANILA, June 9: The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck near the southern Philippine island of Mindanao has climbed to 41, while thousands of residents have been forced to leave their homes, according to local reports.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred early Monday morning at approximately 7:37 a.m. local time. Following the strong tremor, tsunami warnings were issued for several countries across the region, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia.
Videos and images shared online showed damaged buildings and infrastructure in affected areas. Authorities also reported landslides in several locations, complicating rescue and relief operations.
Officials said at least 134 people have been injured, while around 10,000 families have been displaced by the disaster. Search efforts are continuing as authorities work to locate individuals who remain missing.
Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines by both area and population, is home to roughly 26 million people. Emergency teams have been deployed across the region to assist affected communities and assess the extent of the damage.
Authorities cautioned that casualty figures remain preliminary and may change as additional information becomes available. The country’s disaster management agency is currently verifying reports received from local governments and emergency responders.
A comprehensive official update on casualties and damage is expected in the coming days as assessment efforts continue across the earthquake-hit region.
