PM Shehbaz Hopeful About Second Round of US-Iran Talks

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed optimism regarding a second round of direct negotiations between the United States and Iran, saying he hopes the dialogue will help achieve lasting peace in the region.

In an interview with the British newspaper The Sunday Times, the prime minister said Pakistan is currently enjoying one of the brightest moments in its diplomatic history. He stated that the country is increasingly being recognized around the world as a trustworthy mediator capable of building bridges between global powers.

Shehbaz Sharif said peace cannot be achieved easily and requires patience, wisdom, and the ability to make difficult decisions under pressure. He added that Pakistan is continuing efforts to facilitate another round of talks in Islamabad aimed at promoting long-term regional stability.

The prime minister noted that Pakistan’s political and military leadership had worked together to strengthen the country’s international image. According to him, Iran, the United States, and Gulf nations all view Pakistan as a reliable partner for diplomacy and conflict resolution.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s strategic geographic importance, mentioning the country’s long border with Iran and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies. He warned that any regional conflict leading to disruptions in oil shipments or rising energy prices could negatively affect Pakistan’s economy.

Praising the role of Syed Asim Munir, the prime minister said the military leadership played an important role in diplomatic efforts that would be remembered in history. He also acknowledged the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for maintaining continuous diplomatic contacts with international counterparts.

Referring to tensions between Pakistan and India last year, Shehbaz Sharif said international intervention helped prevent a potentially devastating conflict in South Asia.

The prime minister further stated that Pakistan is facing a renewed wave of terrorism involving banned militant organizations, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Balochistan Liberation Army.

He described operations against militant hideouts across the Afghan border as a necessary step for national security. According to the prime minister, Pakistan repeatedly conveyed messages of peace to Kabul but could not remain silent while innocent civilians and security personnel continued to lose their lives.

Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that Pakistan only seeks assurances that terrorist groups will not be allowed to use Afghan territory against Pakistan. He reiterated that eliminating terrorism remains Pakistan’s unwavering commitment and said the country is fighting this battle not only for itself but for global peace and security.
