Russia Rejects US Anti-Iran Resolution at UN Security Council
Russia has blocked a United States-backed resolution against Iran at the United Nations Security Council, describing the proposal as “unbalanced” and “provocative.”
According to Iranian state media, the resolution was introduced by the United States with support from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar.
The proposed resolution reportedly called on Iran to halt attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and remove tolls imposed on ships passing through the vital maritime route.
Russia’s representative at the Security Council opposed the resolution, accusing Washington of once again attempting to escalate tensions in the region.
The Russian envoy argued that the proposal was not balanced and had been designed solely to increase pressure on Iran.
Following Russia’s opposition, the resolution failed to pass in the Security Council, a development being viewed by analysts as a diplomatic setback for Washington.
Meanwhile, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to raise international concern because the waterway remains one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
Iran has already stated that US actions and sanctions in the region have negatively affected the security environment.
Experts say Russia’s support for Iran reflects shifting geopolitical alignments in the Middle East, where Moscow and China are increasingly seen as moving closer to Tehran in opposition to the United States and its regional allies.
